Dritte Ausgabe von Boodts fundamentalem Handbuch über Mineralogie und Edelsteinkunde, erstmals 1609 veröffentlicht und hier posthum korrigiert herausgegeben durch Adrian Toll sowie ergänzt durch "De gemmis et lapidibus libri II" von Johann de Laet in erster Ausgabe. - "In his 'Gemmarum et lapidum historia' Boodt made the first attempt at a systematic description of minerals, dividing the minerals into great and small, rare and common, hard and soft, combustible and incombustible, transparent and opaque. He uses a scale of hardness expressed in three degrees and notes the crystalline forms of some minerals... Boodt criticizes some of the views of Aristotle, Pliny, Paracelsus, and others, but accepts the existence of four elements and three principles, also mentions atoms. He enumerated 600 minerals that he knows from personal observation, and describes their properties, values, imitations and medical applications. There are also tables of values of diamonds according to their size and a short description of the polishing of precious stones" (DSB). - Die Textholzschnitte zeigen Steine und Versteinerungen sowie Vorrichtungen zur Bearbeitung von Mineralien. - "Laet's work set in same type and with several ills borrowed from De Boodt. Outstanding is the inclusion of Theophrastus's 'Peri Lithon', Greek & Latin, with extensive annotations by De Laet, and one of the few places in the gemological literatur where the 'Peri Lithon' appears in its entiret" (Sinkankas). - Vereinzelt gering stockfleckig, die letzten 10 Blätter mit kleinem Wasserrand.
