Einzige Ausgabe dieses seltenen und monumentalen Handbuchs für Marinemaler mit überaus dekorativen Schiffsdarstellungen, hier in einem vollständigen Exemplar mit allen Tafeln. - Der in Frankreich geborene Kunstmaler Dominic Serres (1722-1793) zählt zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Royal Academy und war später ihr Bibliothekar. Zu seinen Lieblingsdarstellungen zählen besonders nautische Motive. 1780 wurde er zum Marinemaler von König George III. ernannt. Der berühmte Marinemaler John Thomas Serres (1759-1825), Sohn von Dominic Serres, hatte zahlreiche Ausstellungen in der Royal Academy und war zeitweise ebenfalls Marinemaler bei König George III. "The publication in 1805 of the Liber Nauticus in the Art of Marine Drawing by John Thomas Serres indicates that by the end of the eighteenth century marine drawing was accepted as a distinct and legitimate specialization for artist and amateur alike. Part I describes in detail, with plates, the parts of a ship, the drawing of water, how ships sail, rates or classes of ships, and the different ranks of admirals.
