Erste Ausgabe des mit schönen altkolorierten Kupfertafeln illustrierten Werkes. In einem vollständigen Exemplar wie hier sehr selten. - "In 1730, Thomas published a star atlas entitled 'Mercurii Philosophici...' The text included information on astronomy and the use of globes and other astronomical instruments. It also had a number of beautiful illustrations, including an armillary sphere; views of the planets; two side-by-side lunar maps whose features were named by Hevelius and Riccioli; the cosmological systems of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, Riccioli, and Copernicus; and a diagram of two celestial hemispheres containing Egyptian images of the constellations... There were also 54 small constellation maps... Most contained an individual major constellation or two smaller neighboring constellations. The orientation was geocentric, and the attractive constellation images had contemporary hand coloring. He had an unusual nomenclature system... The artistic style and choice of constellations were derived from Coronelli, although some of the images were taken from Hevelius... He was also one of the first cartographers to provide individual plates for southern constellations" (Kanas). - Der Benediktinermönch Thomas (1694-1767) aus Elchingen (bei Ulm) wurde 1721 Professor für Mathematik in Salzburg und später Vizerektor ebendort. - Vereinzelt leicht braunfleckig. Einige Tafeln papierbedingt gebräunt. Die "Tabula synoptica" mit alt hinterlegtem Einriss. Einband leicht fleckig und berieben. Rücken sauber restauriert.
