"Watson wrote these essays not to provide a system of chemistry but to supply general knowledge on important and interesting chemical topics to persons untrained in chemistry. The 28 essays published here comprise those of Volumes I-III of the Chemical Essays (in 5 Vol.). Some of the topics treated are the Rise and Progress of Chemistry, Terms and Operations, Saltpetre, Gunpowder and Calcareous Earth. Partington praised the fourth essay, On Fire, Sulphur and Phlogiston, as an excellent account of the phlogiston theory. To the Watson Essays has been added An Essay on the Usefulness of Chemistry by T. Bergman" (Cole). - Watson (1737-1816), Professor für Chemie in Cambridge, trat besonders durch seine mineralogischen und physikalisch-chemischen Arbeiten hervor. He "is best known for his 'Chemical Essays', some of which are still valued for their lucidity - in particular his account of the phlogiston theory" (DSB). - Exlibris.
