In the Benedictine monastery of Walkenried, afterwards used as a school, the boys were trying on day in the cloister who could jump the farthest, when one of them lighted on a place where he stuck fast and could not be moved by his companions. The master came, and when he too failed, it occurred to him that the place must be spell-bound, so that the boy could not get away until something hidden was revealed. So he bade the boy look about him and when he observed letters and marks on the wall, and had shown them to the master, the latter understood that treasure was concealed there, and the boy was forthwith free to move from the enchanted place. When all was quiet the master returned, opened the place indicated in the wall, abstracted a small box and then disappeared, leaving his belongings behind him. From which people suspected that the box had contained the 'Lapis philosophicus'" (Ferguson). - Die ersten Blätter mit schmalem schwachen Fleck im unteren Rand.
