It contains an explanation and enlargement of Descartes' theory of vortices and attempts to explain the cause of gravitation and capillarity. The accuracy of the Boyle-Mariotte law is doubted and some of Newton's great conceptions on aether are anticipated. Prof. W. W. R. Ball says: 'I believe that Bernoulli was the first to denote the accelerating effect of gravity by an algebraic sign g, and thus arrived at the formula V² equals 2 gh.'"
